IKEA Hack Idea to Customize Kids Beds | DIY Upholstered Headboard

When it came time to graduate to big boy beds, we were alarmed. With twins we needed not one, but two new beds. That cost can get high. Therefore, we purchased two inexpensive bed frames from Ikea, and I customized them. The end result was two superhero upholstered, black stained beds. Super!

Kids Bed

Step 1: Purchase an Ikea Fjellse bed frame for $30.

You’ll need to put this together.

Step 2: Stain the frame.

I stained one bed before I put it together and the other after. It was by far faster and easier to stain the bed after it was assembled. I recommend putting your bed frame together BEFORE you stain it.

Step 3: Assemble the padded headboard.

Have your home improvement store cut a piece of peg board to the measurements of your headboard.

Using spray adhesive attach a piece of foam to the peg board.

Cover the foam with batting.

Pull a piece of fabric over the foam tightly and staple it to the back of the peg board.

Step 4: Screw the upholstered peg board on to the headboard of your frame.

Each bed ended up around $130 with bed slats, fabric, foam and supplies. This was a full weekend diy project for me, but you could probably do it in a day if you were just doing one bed.

You can also add buttons into the fabric of the headboard. I did this, but the boys ended up pulling them out. Oops!

These Ikea pine beds are fantastic because they are SO inexpensive and easily customizable. Pick any style of fabric for any themed kids room. Over time we can swap out the fabric of our beds for an older look.

I’m somewhat of an Ikea fangirl. Almost all the furniture in our home is from there. I’ve had a lot of success with the wood furniture, but not so much with the plywood furniture they favor for the kids furniture.
